Megadeth – Endgame

Review by David Chitty…

Megadeth is back.

It took three releases after Megadeth’s reunion before they finally hit their stride, but the red fury that is MegaDave has returned to show those legendary thrashers cum country-alt rock band how the old school can still thrash the fuck out of the mainstream. After the boredom inducing The System has Failed and the brilliant start, but out of wind by track three experiment that was United Abominations, Mustaine drops Endgame upon us.

Bolstered by new guitarist Chris Broderick, Mustaine has managed to craft an album of pure head banging brilliance and air guitar shred fests. Starting off with the instrumental ‘Dialectic Chaos’, we have Dave and Chris trading guitar solos like the ‘Hangar 18′ days with Marty Friedman, and then bursts into the true opening track ‘This Day We Fight’ which thrashes the hell out of its riffs and if you’re not head banging, you’re not listening properly. The album has a nice mix up of tracks like the mid-paced ‘44 Minutes’, the power ballad ‘The Hardest Part is Letting Go’ and ‘Bodies’ brings to mind the crushing power of ‘Symphony of Destruction’. The vocals are quality Mustaine but they don’t quite have the bile and bite that he used to, but the anger is there. The lyrics have also improved, with Dave staying away from preaching Christianity, and he has let go a bit of the conspiracy theorist shtick that plagued United Abominations.

It’s fairly obvious that the big four of thrash are never going to release any more classic albums (Metallica continuing to exist in a cesspool of their imagined greatness, Anthrax unable to choose a singer, Slayer (lol)), but with this Megadeth come that much closer. It won’t replace Peace Sells or Rust in Peace but it’s a solid release that will have you head banging all night long.
